The nearest Mill Road has to a supermarket is the local Co-operative Food Store. One of the biggest food stores on the street, they are the usual destination for a weekly shop for nearby residents.

Although a big, national brand, our Co-operative store is very much connected to the local community. Many members of staff live in the area and the organisation supports a number of local causes including sponsorship of the Traders’ Association.

In addition, the Co-operative has supported the Norfolk Street Party, the Festive Lights and our biggest and most beloved event, the annual Winter Fair. Their sponsorship has made the difference to these local initiatives and as a company they demonstrate how a bigger store can make an effort to be operated in a more ethical and socially conscious way.

As an area known for it’s unique, international and independent shops, the arrival of Tescos on Mill Road was met with much protest. A petition with over 4,000 signatures was presented to the Council against the shop’s arrival in 2009.

The main focus of the campaign, led primarily by the Mill Road Society, was that a Tesco in this location would considerably damage other local, smaller businesses. You can read more here. Tesco is now a contributing member of the Traders’ Association.
